TUESDAY 6/25: All About Ticks at ESCC

Prevention, education, and early detection are the themes of the upcoming Tickborne Illness Awareness Seminar 6:30-9 p.m. Tuesday, June 25,  at the Workforce Development Center located at the Eastern Shore Community College at 29300 Lankford Highway in Melfa.

Healthcare providers and the general public are invited to attend free of charge. The seminar is sponsored by sponsored by the Eastern Shore Health District and Eastern Shore Medical Reserve Corps.

In 2012 there were an estimated 1,110 cases of confirmed or probable Lyme Disease reported by healthcare providers throughout the state of Virginia. This was about 9% higher than were reported in 2011. Additionally, 460 cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and 150 cases of Ehrlichiosis/Anaplasmosis were reported.

Most patients, when treated with antibiotics in the early stages of these infections, quickly recover, noted State Health Commissioner Cynthia C. Romero in a letter to state healthcare providers. Prevention, education, and early detection are the key public health messages.

The Eastern Shore Health District has invited Virginia Department of Health State Public Health Entomologist/Epidemiologist, David Gaines and acting Eastern Shore Health Director David Chang to speak.

Representatives from the local patient support groups Lyme Connection and National Capital Lyme Association’s Hampton Roads Chapter have also been invited to attend the seminar.

Free Tick Identification Charts, Brochures, Fact Sheets and Tick Removal Kits will be provided while supplies last.
