Change of Command at American Legion Post 56
On July 8, Dave Steward passed the leadership role for American Legion Post 56 to incoming Commander Joe Vaccaro. The ceremony was well attended and Vaccaro praised Steward for his efforts to support the veterans on the shore. Vaccaro pledged to continue Steward’s efforts and announced that he would seek more membership for Post 56 and advocate for a Community Based Outpatient Clinic for the shore.
CBOCs are operated by the Veterans Administration and are found scattered throughout the United States. Their purpose is to make health care access easier for veterans by providing outpatient services including health and wellness visits without the wait time and travel of the larger medical facilities. There are currently over 800 such clinics but none on the shore where there are over 5,600 veterans.
Post 56 also welcomed incoming SAL Commander Jim Weiner and ALA President Susan Moyers. Vaccaro noted that Post 56 could not operate without the support of these two organizations and thanked Weiner and Moyers for their dedication and loyalty to the Post.
Post 56 was founded in 1922 and is one of the oldest American Legion Posts in America.
