Shorekeeper Condemns Move to Begin Oil Exploration

July 21, 2014: In response to the Obama Administration’s announcement to move forward with oil exploration along the East Coast, Virginia Eastern Shorekeeper Executive Director Jay Ford released the following statement:

“We are deeply troubled and disappointed by the administration’s decision to move forward with oil exploration along the East Coast. By the administration’s own admission this move will lead to the loss of thousands of marine creatures through the use of seismic cannons. Furthermore, this move represents a step backwards for America’s energy future.

“Here on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, we have little to gain and everything to lose from offshore drilling. Our military and NASA have both warned us that drilling off our coast could result in their relocating. Additionally, our aquaculture and tourism industries would be absolutely devastated by a spill in our waters. Offshore oil drilling will put the brightest spots of the Eastern Shore economy in jeopardy for an extremely limited number of local jobs.

“Clean Waters are worth far more to our local economy than the perpetual risk offshore drilling represents. Virginia Eastern Shorekeeper will be contacting federal and state representatives urging them to protect the waters off Virginia’s coast and encourage investment in more responsible solutions to America’s future energy needs.”
