WEEKEND: Ice, Snow, Water, and Sand

WEEKEND: ICE, SNOW, WATER, AND SAND

When salt water freezes you know it’s cold — not that anyone needed to be told. What looks like sea foam in this photo is actually ice with a snowy frosting.  The Bay’s brackish water only freezes where it is relatively still, such as around the jetty.

WEEKEND: Cold Duck

WEEKEND: COLD DUCK

By popular demand, Cape Charles’ own Ron Wrucke is sharing another of his magnificent bird photographs. His description: “In the spirit of the season, and our cold weather that doesn’t seem to want to go away, an image of some very cold ducks trying not to swim.” A duck out of water? Ron more or less got his ducks in a row, but male mallards outnumber females 6-4. Someone got left out of the cold.

See more of Ron Wrucke’s local photographs at his website, easternshoreimaging.com.

WEEKEND: Here’s Looking at You, Hedwig

WEEKEND:  HERE’S LOOKING AT YOU, HEDWIG

Miriam Elton saw the owl first, and told her neighbor Stefanie Hadden, who grabbed her camera and her boys and headed out to the Bay. There on the breakwater the bird posed for some time, and Stefanie got the picture, first for her Facebook friends, and now for Wave readers to enjoy.  Renowned ornithologist Ned Brinkley was soon on the scene with his spotting scope, and confirmed it was a juvenile snowy owl. Harry Potter’s Hedwig? Well, at least in name, for that’s what the boys are calling her. Readers are invited to submit their favorite local photos for Weekend editions, when the picture stretches across the page.
