Larry Veber has withdrawn his candidacy for Cape Charles Town Council in the November 6 special election.

Speaking at the conclusion of last night’s Town Council meeting, Veber said he wanted to devote more time to his business.

Veber served on Council for eight years before being defeated in last May’s election. But following the death of councilman-elect Don Clarke, Veber was appointed to serve until a special election could be held.

“Some good things have taken place in Cape Charles in the past eight years that I have been on Council,” Veber said. He praised the Town staff and thanked his colleagues on Council.

With Veber’s withdrawal, the Town Council election becomes a two-way race between Steve Bennett and Dan Burke.

Steve Bennett was elected to Town Council in 2008 and defeated for re-election in May. He is a resident of Bay Creek. Bennett has not responded to the Wave’s request for information about his campaign.

Burke is the newcomer in the race. After a career with oil exploration firm Schlumberger Technologies, with many vacations spent in Cape Charles, he retired here with his wife, Linda, last year. Burke’s motivation for running is to provide “a new perspective on financial accountability and open government.” The Burkes live on Madison Avenue in the Historic District.

I am sorry to see Larry Veber abandon his Town Council candidacy and, very likely, his future involvement in Town leadership. I first met Larry about 10 years ago, as he was picking up trash from the median on our street, blocks away from his home. Since then, I have seen Larry and his wife Trina in an active role at every single event I attended and I have continuously heard of his involvement in the life of Cape Charles from various – mostly media – sources.

Cape Charles had plenty of litter a decade ago: our charming Casbah on the Bay was pretty trashed, and a little dangerous. The town’s chic resort status proudly promoted on billboards and in other print media today would have never been possible without people like Larry Veber (and dedicated investors).

Larry most likely has no clue of my existence – I am a weekender. I, however, have been keenly aware of Larry’s contribution to my quality of life in Cape Charles and I am very, very grateful. Larry Veber, you will always have my vote.
