FRIDAY 12/19: ‘Weary of War — the Shore in December 1864′

“Weary of War: The Shore in December 1864” is the subject of a free 90-minute seminar 12:30 p.m. Friday, December 19, in the Lecture Hall of the Eastern Shore Community College, 29300 Lankford Hwy., Melfa. Historian Kellee Blake will address declining hopes for Southern victory, the Shore command of bright young colonel Frank J. White (including his handling of the previously enslaved population), the predicament of women, and the costly demand that every adult on the Shore take the dreaded oath.

Blake is the retired director of the National Archives-Mid Atlantic Region and the author of multiple articles on divided loyalties in wartime. She is writing a book about the Civil War on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

The seminar is sponsored by the Science and Philosophy Seminar of the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Sounds interesting, will anyone be taping it for c-span? I can’t be there.

What a privilege and treat of an education it was this afternoon finally to hear Kellee Blake. Had regretted missing several opportunities; this introduction strongly reinforced those regrets. A lovely very intelligent lady who is doing oceans for the Shore and history, not rewriting it. Since she confesses to being very much ‘a Christmas person,’ we wish her the Merry Christmas that she deserves.

I am amazed each time I attend one of her lectures at the depth and detail that she brings to our local civil war history. We are so lucky to have someone of her knowledge and ability who is so good at bringing our unique history to us in such detail. Thank you Kellee, can’t wait for your book.
