Experts to Rally Public Against County-Wide Rezoning

Prominent planning experts and local environmentalists will address a public forum 7 p.m. Thursday, November 6, at the Eastville Fire Department Bingo Hall. Sponsored by Virginia Eastern Shorekeeper and Citizens for a Better Eastern Shore, the forum is meant to educate the public on the proposed Northampton County zoning overhaul.
Panelists include former chair of Northampton County Planning Commission Martina Coker and former commissioners and planning officials Roberta Kellam and Mary Miller. They will be joined by David Kabler, a real estate broker with 41 years of experience, and Art Schwarzschild, a marine scientist who directs the UVA research center in Oyster and who is also chairman of the Willis Wharf Village Steering Committee.
Other panelists include retired hydro-geologist Gene Hampton who served on the Eastern Shore’s bi-county groundwater committee for many years, and Ken Dufty, a longtime community organizer.
The forum will be moderated by Virginia Eastern Shorekeeper Jay Ford, who will also offer a presentation on the timeline of the rezoning process by the County Board of Supervisors and Planning staff.
Panelists will explain how the proposed zoning could affect residents throughout the county, including those in the five incorporated towns, the 29 hamlets, and the nine villages.
The presentation will also include suggestions on how residents and interested citizens can be more effective in having their concerns voiced and considered by the County Board of Supervisors before they vote on the final ordinance. Organizers say the forum will be “the most comprehensive and informative presentation on this critical issue to date,” and urge county residents to attend.

Don’t Confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day

Veterans Day is Tuesday, November 11. Its purpose is sometimes confused with Memorial Day.
Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day remembers the men and women who died while serving. Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day and marked the end of hostilities of World War I that occurred at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month. Therefore, the day is always recognized on November 11th, regardless of the day of the week the 11th falls on.
American Legion Post 56 will conduct their Veteran’s Day ceremony at the Cape Charles Memorial Flag Pole on Mason Avenue starting at 10:55 a.m. Guest speaker will be retired Army veteran Clayton Allen, and his wife, Rev. Janet Allen, will lead the prayer service. The public is most welcome, and is requested to dress appropriately for this outdoor ceremony. [Read more…]
“Butch” Sayers, 64, Retired Mechanic

Irving Edward “Butch” Sayers, Jr., 64, husband of the late Denise Thornes Sayers and a resident of Cape Charles, passed away Tuesday, November 4, at his residence.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, November 8, at Cape Charles Cemetery with Rev. Jonathan Carpenter officiating.
Family will join friends at Wilkins-Doughty Funeral Home Friday evening from 6 to 7:30.
Mr. Sayers was born March 18, 1950, in Eastville, the son of the late Irving E. Sayers, Sr. He was a retired A.S.E. Certified Auto Mechanic and member of the Corvette Club of the Eastern Shore. [Read more…]

Chesapeake Bay Log Canoes Seminar at ESCC
The next Science and Philosophy Seminar is “Chesapeake Bay Log Canoes and the Annie C.” The free 90-minute seminar will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, November 7, in the Lecture Hall of the Eastern Shore Community College, 29300 Lankford Hwy., Melfa. Joe Valentine will describe the history of traditional Log Canoes and their construction, with especial reference to the restored, 45 feet-long, century-old Annie C. on display at Ker Place in Onancock.
Savage Neck Dunes Closed Weekdays During Deer Hunting Season
Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve will be closed to visitors most weekdays from November 3 through December 19 for managed deer hunts. The preserve will be open to visitors on weekends during this time. The hunts help reduce deer browsing and trampling of the preserve’s sensitive resources. Savage Neck Dunes is located in Northampton County on the Chesapeake Bay. The 298-acre preserve is owned and managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.
Beach Access Closed at Jefferson Avenue
The Town of Cape Charles has closed the Jefferson Avenue beach access using erosion fence and burlap. This is the worst area where sand blows onto Bay Avenue. There is very little beach to sidewalk ratio in this area and no grass to help hold the sand. The new fence will help build up the sand in this area. A temporary wooden post will also be installed with safety rope fencing along the edge of the sidewalk due to the drop-off in this area. While this entrance is closed, the Public Works crew will be constructing wooden steps with a railing to be installed from the sidewalk to the beach. The maintenance entrance is close by and all other beach access points will remain open.
