CAPE CHARLES WAVE

August 1, 2013

Arts Enter Cape Charles is spearheading an ambitious two-week festival in August, the likes of which has never before been attempted in this little town. Dance, music, art, and theatre will be presented at the Harbor, the Park, Strawberry Street, and Mason Avenue.

The arts festival is set to kick off simultaneously with the Town’s August 3-4 Clam Slam (see related story). Some 34 staged events are scheduled — outdoors, indoors, free, and for admission.

Saturday night (August 3), Mark Jensen, Tony Sacco & Friends perform 6-8 p.m. on Mason Avenue in front of The Stage Door Gallery (Free).

That’s the warm-up for the IVIR Dance Company’s 8 p.m. performance at the Palace Theatre ($12 adults/$5 students). IVIR Dance, based in Italy, “pursues its own language and gestures inspired by the philosophy of contemporary dance but processed through new and avant-garde linguistic elements.” (If that doesn’t get the idea across, the above photo should.)

REVIEWERS WANTED: The Wave is looking for volunteer reviewers to document this unprecedented two-week Harbor for the Arts Festival. You need not be a professional (after all, many of the productions are by amateurs) — just a lover of the arts. Reviews should be submitted as quickly as possible following a performance (ideally within 24 hours). Email [email protected] to coordinate.

The world’s fascination with beautiful fish-tailed women has not escaped Cape Charles, where the Town’s very own mermaid happily resides on the revitalized storefront area of Strawberry Street with a fresh coat of paint.

Clelia Sheppard of Arts Enter commissioned local student Meadow Noonan to decorate the mermaid with a design inspired by “growing the arts.”

With the help of friends Kristin Lewis and Julia Bridgforth, the mermaid was painted with a black background blooming with colorful flowers and beautiful butterflies.

Originally the mermaid was part of a fleet of 130 that were commissioned by Norfolk attorney Peter Decker well over a decade ago. The mermaids have become a symbol for Norfolk, where various organizations purchased them in the “Mermaids on Parade” auctions.

Many artists were asked to decorate the mermaids, including Clelia Sheppard. [Read more…]

The long-awaited website promoting Cape Charles as a tourist destination went live Thursday at http://www.capecharlesbythebay.com.

The $15,000 website was funded by the Cape Charles “Our Town” project through grants and contributions.

The website banner proclaims “Cape Charles by the Bay – Harbor for the Arts.”  A visitor to the website sees a succession of five billboard presentations, each for three seconds.

First is “Love Your Harbor (Relax in Cape Charles),” with a photo of a sunset over the Bay. (Curiously, the Town Harbor is not shown.)

Second is “Love Your Sweet Dreams (Stay in Cape Charles),” with a close-up of rocking chairs on the porch at the Town’s oldest B&B, Sea Gate, owned by Vice-Mayor Chris Bannon.

Third up is “Love the Charm (Shop in Cape Charles),” featuring a smiling Meredith Restein, proprietor of Moonrise Jewelry on Strawberry Street.

The fourth rotation is “Love Your Drive (Golf in Cape Charles),” with an overlook of Bay Creek’s Jack Nicklaus course facing the lighthouse.

Last comes “Love the Adrenaline (Play in Cape Charles),” depicting wetsuit-equipped kite boarders on the Bay. [Read more…]
