FRIDAY 1/16: Bird Photography on the Eastern Shore

“Bird Photography on the Eastern Shore,” sponsored by the Science and Philosophy Seminar of the Eastern Shore of Virginia, will be held from 12:30-2 p.m. Friday, January 16, in the Eastern Shore Community College lecture hall in Melfa. George Budd will show how he has used the medium of bird photography in a journey to open himself up to the world around him. Budd, now retired, has lived with his family on the Shore for 10 years.  He plans to continue with his photography.

Beekeeping Class for Beginners

American Legion Post Supports Food Pantry

American Legion Post 56 Commander Joe Vaccaro reports that the Post collected and delivered over 570 dry and canned food items to the Cape Charles Food Pantry this year. “Of significant note is the fact that this was the first year the Post participated in this food drive, and plans are already under way to make this an annual event at Post 56,” Vaccaro noted.

TUESDAY 1/20: New Chiropractor, New Radio Show

Dr. Ed Bull of Bayside Chiropractic in Cape Charles has begun hosting a health-related radio show with phone-in questions. The show is broadcast at 12:40 p.m. every other Tuesday on WESR-FM, 103.3. The next show is January 20, when Dr. Bull will discuss peripheral neuropathy.

District 1 Supervisor Granville Hogg will hold a Town Hall meeting on Thursday, January 8, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Kiptopeke Elementary School.  Hogg will discuss several items the Northampton County Board will be making decisions about in the coming months, and then ask for input and questions from the public on each issue.

Under the theme “Raise Revenue or Control Expense,” the following issues will be discused:

— Public Service Authority wastewater project for Route 13 commercial development;

— $600,000 financial obligation to USDA;

— Hospital relocation;

— Expenditures and sites for an Emergency Medical Service facility, and with the changes in our workforce, how to maintain EMS (either volunteer or paid personnel);

— Construction of a high school and middle school: How to pay for it?

— Structural problems found at Northampton High School

— How to control the $110,000 yearly maintenance of the former middle school; and

— Disposal of vacant property.

In addition to District 1 residents, Hogg welcomes all county residents to the Town Hall meeting.

FRIDAY 1/9: Ron West Describes Ferries of the Eastern Shore

“Gone But Not Forgotten:  Ferries of the Eastern Shore” is a free 90-minute seminar beginning 12:30 p.m. Friday, January 9, at Eastern Shore Community College lecture hall, 29300 Lankford Hwy. in Melfa. Ron West will address the history of the Cape Charles and Kiptopeke car ferry service which started in the 1920s and ended with the opening of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel in 1964. West was born and raised on the Shore and worked in education here. The event is sponsored by the Science and Philosophy Seminar of the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
