Ira Garland Merritt, 62, Cape Charles Native

Ira Garland Merritt, Jr., 62, husband of Elaine Doris Merritt and a resident of Eastville, passed away Tuesday, November 13, at his residence.

A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post #56, P.O. Box 357, Cheriton, VA 23316.

 A native of Cape Charles, Mr. Merritt was the son of the late Ira G. Merritt, Sr., and the late Doris Magakee Merritt, and was raised by the late Leroy Thurman and the late Lula Merritt Thurman. He was a retired commercial fisherman, U.S. Army veteran and member of American Legion Post #56.

He is survived by three children, Demetrious Ann Bruno of Accomac, Ira G. Merritt III of Eastville, Shavon Alexis Wilson and her husband, Andrew, of Greensboro, NC; two sisters, Sarita Thurman of Exmore and Cindy Melson of Accomac; one brother, Louis Midget of Nebraska; and one nephew, William Thomas Merritt, Jr., of Eastville. Sunday Service for Carlisle Lamar Nottingham, 92

Carlisle Lamar Nottingham, 92, husband of the late Faye Phillips Nottingham and the late Hattie Brunley Nottingham and a resident of Heritage Hall Healthcare in Nassawadox, passed away Thursday, November 1, at his residence.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, November 4, at the Wachapreague Cemetery with the Rev. Tammy L. Estep officiating.

A native of Cape Charles, Mr. Nottingham was the son of the late Dr. Carlisle L. Nottingham and the late Eliza Caine Nottingham. He was a retired postmaster of the Wachapreague Post Office, a former deacon and member of Powelton Presbyterian Church, Past Master of Ocean Masonic Lodge AF & AM, member of Loyal Order of the Moose #683, and member of American Legion Post #56. Saturday Service for Eunice Betsy Brown, 1924-2012

A Celebration of Life service for Eunice Betsy Brown will be held 12 noon Saturday, October 13, at First Baptist Church, Capeville, with  the Rev. Kelvin F. Jones officiating.

Internment will be at Cape Charles Community Cemetery. Arrangements are by Gray’s Funeral Home, Cape Charles.

Mrs. Brown passed away October 4 at her home in Greenbackville. She was born in Cedar Grove on November 28, 1924.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, John Willie Brown; three children, Larry Wayne Corney of Stamford, CT, Faye Eulonda Perry of Atlanta, GA, and Ray Lynwood Brown of Miami, FL; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters-in law; 3 God-children; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Douglas DeLeon Walker, better known as Doug, 45, husband of Margaret “Ann” Walker and a resident of Cape Charles, passed away Tuesday, October 9, at his residence.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 14, at 2 p.m. at Cape Charles Fire House, 501 Mason Ave., Cape Charles with the Rev. Russell Goodrich officiating.

A native of Chesapeake, he was the son of Donnie V. Hensley of Virginia Beach and Cosmo Walker and his wife, Denise, of Chesapeake.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a son, Thomas Lee Stevens and his wife, Ellen, of Cape Charles; a daughter, Candie Leigh Walker of Cape Charles; four brothers, Cosmo L. Daniel Lee Marshall, 77, Hog Island Native

Daniel Lee Marshall, 77, husband of the late Orma Jean Marshall and a Townsend resident, passed away Saturday, September 29.

A graveside service with Masonic Rites will be held Tuesday, October 2, at 11 a.m. at Capeville Masonic Cemetery with the Rev. Elizabeth A. Lutz officiating.

Family will join friends Monday evening from 6 to 7 p.m. at Wilkins-Doughty Funeral Home in Cape Charles.

A native of Hog Island, he was the son of the late Nevelle Thomas Marshall and the late Fairy Stevens Marshall.

Mr. Marshall was retired from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel District and a barber. He also worked for the VA Ferry Corporation. He was a member of Capeville United Methodist Church, Capeville Masonic Lodge 107 AF&AM, and was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. [Read more…]

Martha Anderson Fisher Rolley, 95, wife of the late Francis V. “Drag” Rolley and a resident of Cheriton, died Thursday, September 20, in Nassawadox.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, September 23, at 2 p.m. at Cape Charles Cemetery with Reverend Jeff Conrow and Mr. Barry Downing officiating.

Robert Bois Funeral Friday at St. Charles Catholic Church

Robert D. Bois Sr., 80, husband of Anne Bois and a resident of Seaview, VA, passed away suddenly Monday, August 6, at his residence.

Funeral services with military and VMRC honors will be held Friday, August 10, at St. Charles Catholic Church, 545 Randolph Ave, Cape Charles, at 2 p.m. with Father J. Michael Breslin officiating.

Robert Bois was born July 7, 1932, in South Grafton, MA, the son of the late David Bois and the late Albina Lucier Bois.

He served four years in the Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Missouri and the USS Albany, and then 18 years in the US Air Force, both in the United States and overseas, retiring as a Master Sergeant. After the military, he began a second career with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, completing 18 years of service to the local community, retiring as Captain for the Eastern Shore and Peninsula areas. Beachfront Memorial Service for Robert Gennings, 1952-2012

Robert Charles Gennings, 59, husband of Mary Katherine Belote Gennings and a resident of Williamsburg, passed away Thursday, August 2.

A celebration of his life will be held Monday, August 6, at sunset (7:30 p.m.) at the north end of the Cape Charles Beach. The Rev. Linwood Cook will officiate, and all are invited to attend.

Robert Gennings was born November 20, 1952, in Arkansas, and grew up in Texas. He was the son of the late Robert Truman Gennings and the late Helen Percell Gennings.

He was a retired heavy equipment operator for George Nice and Sons, and previously worked for the Missouri State Highway Department and in the oil fields of Texas.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Robert Bryan Gennings of Williamsburg, Kimberly Faye Osterdyk of Golden City, Mo., James Frances Hertig II and companion, Tedra Whitting, of Gravois Mills, Mo., Katherine Danielle Cook and husband, Gray, of Chatham, Va., and Luther Tankard Burgess and companion, Amber, of Cape Charles; two sisters, Sister Catherine Clare of Greenwich, NY, and Nancy Logan and husband, Jim, of Gonzales, TX.
