SUNDAY 5/4: Eastern Shore Orchestra at Hungars Church

The Orchestra of the Eastern Shore will end its 2013-14 season with “Bookends—Bach to Britten,” at Hungars Episcopal Church on Bayside Road in Bridgetown (Machipongo) on Sunday, May 4, at 4 p.m.

The program will feature two Baroque concertos, the first by Vivaldi for two cellos. Long-time orchestra member and Chair of the Orchestra’s Board of Directors, Marion Naar, will be joined by her friend Charlotte Sundstrom as soloists in this challenging and dynamic work. The orchestra will follow that with a performance of J. S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, a concerto grosso featuring three soloists in the concertino. Flutists Ally Tarwater and Dan Lawrence will be joined by Lee Jordan-Anders on the harpsichord.

The program will begin with Felix Mendelssohn’s String Symphony No. 7 in D Minor, a four-movement work composed when Mendelssohn was still in his teens. To conclude, the orchestra will play Benjamin Britten’s Simple Symphony, a clever, inventive composition full of good humor that presents significant challenges for all players. Music Director Lee Jordan-Anders will conduct.

As always, the orchestra’s concerts are free and open to the public; however, donations are happily accepted.
