Elizabeth Reid Wins American Legion Essay Contest

Elizabeth Reid, a Northampton Middle School student, is the winner of the Virginia American Legion First District (Eastern Shore) middle school essay contest. Each year, the American Legion Post 56 in Cheriton invites Northampton County middle school students to write a one page essay that begins with, “I like living in America because . . . .”

Ms. Reid’s essay declared that she liked living in America “because of our many freedoms, the diversity, and our military.” She further expressed that “I am very fortunate to live in this country.”

She will be awarded $50, and her essay will be entered in the statewide American Legion competition. Her teachers, Ms. Shirley Dotting (Civics) and Ms. Kathleen Powell (English), will receive $75 to purchase school supplies and materials.

Last year, Alex Marshall, who was then a Northampton Middle School student, not only won the American Legion First District award but went on to win the statewide essay competition. Ms. Marshall received $300 for her Eastern Shore and statewide first-place finishes.

Commander Joseph Vaccaro congratulates the Americanism essay winners and also thanks Broadwater Academy and the Cape Charles Christian School for their well written, thoughtful submissions.
