Memorial Service Thursday for Donald Ramer, 85

Donald Forrest Ramer, 85, husband of Ortrude Mary “Trudy” Ramer and a resident of Eastville, passed away Saturday, February 9, at his residence.

A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, February 14, at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Elizabeth A. Lutz officiating.

A private interment will be held at a later date in the Laureldale Cemetery in Reading, PA.

A native of Reading, PA, Mr. Ramer was the son of the late Claude Joseph Ramer and the late Pauline Hilton Ramer. He retired from Eastern Airlines after 34 years of service. He was an avid golfer, and loved jazz music. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Men’s Group. [Read more…]

Jeanette ‘Nettie’ Fitchett Spady, 83; Matriarch Served Many

Jeanette Fitchett Spady, better known as “Nettie”, 83, passed away Friday, February 1, surrounded by her family members and loved ones at her daughter’s home in Machipongo.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday, February 4, at Doughty Funeral Home in Exmore with the Rev. Russell Goodrich and the Rev. Jack D. Pruitt officiating.

Interment will follow in Johnson’s United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Family will join friends at Doughty Funeral Home Sunday from 7-8:30 p.m.

H. Allen Floyd, Jr., 90, husband of Mary Elizabeth Cullen Floyd and a resident of Belle Haven, passed away Saturday, January 26, at his residence.

Alston Joynes Godwin, 101, Pioneer Female Undertaker

Alston Joynes Godwin, 101, died at her Cape Charles residence Wednesday, January 16.

The family will receive friends at a viewing 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, January 23, at First Baptist Church, Cape Charles. The funeral service will be 12 noon Thursday, January 24, at the church.

She is survived by a son, Cape Charles Town Council member Thomas George Godwin, and his wife Juanita; a daughter, Jennie Marie King; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Godwin was one of Cape Charles’ longest living residents. She was one of the oldest living licensed funeral directors in the state of Virginia, and was considered by many as a trailblazer for women in the funeral business.

Born in 1911 in the small community of Fairview on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, her early days were spent commuting from her family’s farm to school via horse and buggy. As a teenager, she attended boarding school at Tidewater Institute and Nursing College at Dixie Hospital in Hampton.

At the age of 16, she began a mortuary apprenticeship at Gray’s Funeral Home, under the direction of her aunt and uncle, Jennie and Mills Gray. She learned the art and science of funeral directing and contributed to the business in numerous capacities before attaining a Virginia Funeral Director’s license in 1944.

Upon the passing of her aunt, Godwin became owner and operator of Gray’s Funeral Home, and built the current location near her home in Cape Charles. [Read more…]

Dennis Franklin Thornes, Jr., 84, husband of Ethel Ada Parker Thornes and a resident of Birdsnest, passed away Thursday, January 17, at his residence.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, January 20, at Cape Charles Cemetery with the Rev. Randy Lewis officiating.

A native of Accomac, Mr. Thornes was the son of the late Dennis Franklin Thornes, Sr. and the late Clara Crockett Thornes.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, club champion of the Northampton Country Club, dedicated theologian and retired letter carrier for the Cape Charles Post Office. [Read more…]

Nora Fowlkes Wise, 92, wife of the late Harold Chester Wise, Jr., and a resident of Richmond, formerly of Cheriton, passed away Friday, January 4, at her residence.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday, January 7, at Cheriton Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Charles Peterson officiating. Interment will follow in Cape Charles Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, c/o Tom E. Rienerth, 12 King Street, Onancock, VA 23417.

A native of South Hill, Mrs. Wise was the daughter of the late Henry Lee Fowlkes and the late Rosa Glass Fowlkes. She graduated from Madison College. Prior to retiring from Bank of America, she was a teacher at Northampton High School. She was a member of Cheriton Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Richmond, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Ye Accawmacke Garden Club. [Read more…]

Virginia “Skip” Brady Parker, 84, wife of the late William “Digger” Parker and a resident of Cape Charles,  passed away Thursday, January 3, at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, January 7, at Cape Charles Cemetery with the Rev. Joe Moore officiating.

Family will join friends at Wilkins-Doughty Funeral Home Sunday evening from 7-8:30 p.m..

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

A native of Cape Charles, Mrs. Ballard was the daughter of the late James Edward Bowden and the late Lorena Dunton Bowden. She was an officer of Ballard Brothers Fish Company, manager of Cherrystone Campgrounds Store, the first President of Broadwater Parents Association, Past Worthy Matron and Member of Order of the Eastern Star Northampton Chapter #2, and a member of Epworth United Methodist Church.
