FRIDAY 1/17: Laurie Klingel Presents Photo Tour of Eyre Hall Gardens

Laurie Klingel will present “The Historic Orangerie of Eyre Hall,” 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 17, as part of the Barrier Islands Center Coffee Hour Speaker Series.

Due to limited seating, please RSVP the Barrier Islands Center at 757-678-5550.

Klingel’s talk will focus on the recently completed renovation of the 19th century orangerie located at Eyre Hall. An orangerie was a building similar to a greenhouse. It was popular from the 17th to the 19th centuries. As the name suggests, the building was a place where citrus trees often wintered, thus helping the trees survive through frosts.

She will guide the audience on a tour of Eyre Hall gardens using superb garden photography, horticultural insight and historical anecdotes.

Klingel is co-owner of Appleseed Nurseries on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and the Head Gardener at Eyre Hall, near Cheriton. Klingel has been gardening at Eyre Hall for eight years, overseeing the installation of thousands of spring bulbs and perennials as well as tending the extensive boxwood plantings.
