Edith Mae Bailey Mitchell, 98, wife of the late Willis E. Mitchell, passed away peacefully in her home in Cape Charles Tuesday, April 9.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at St. Stephen’s AME Church, 511 Jefferson Avenue, Cape Charles.

Mrs. Mitchell was born April 2,1915, in Bayview, and was the daughter of the late Albert Terry and Emma Terry.

She was a resident of Cape Charles, and in her earlier years was a domestic worker, but spent most  her life as a homemaker, raising seven children. [Read more…]

Memorial Service Monday for William ‘Pat’ Dunton, 60

William Patrick Dunton, better known as Pat, 60,  passed away Thursday, April 11, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, April 15, at Wilkins-Doughty Funeral Home in Cape Charles with the Rev. Elizabeth Lutz officiating. A private interment will be held in Cape Charles Cemetery.

Mr. Dunton was a Richmond resident formerly of Seaview. He was the son of the late William Richard Dunton and the late Virginia Travis Dunton and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Survivors include an aunt, Betty L. Travis of Painter; an uncle, George N. Doughty of Cape Charles; and numerous cousins.

Memorial Service at Town Harbor for Captain of C.C. Rider

Gary Richard Trew, 54, husband of Diane Patrice Trew, passed away suddenly at Cape Charles Harbor aboard the C.C. Rider on Sunday, April 7.

A memorial service will be held dockside at the Town Harbor 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13. Afterwards the family will take his ashes out to sea and then meet later at the Shanty restaurant.

Mr. Trew was a resident of Benson, MN, but spent some of his retirement in Cape Charles as Captain of the C.C. Rider.

Born October 22, 1958, in Flint, MI, he was the son of the late Burley William Trew and Eeva Heinonen Trew. [Read more…]

Town Property Values Drop 35% — Tax Rates Will Increase

It was a long time coming, but properties in Cape Charles and Northampton County have finally been reassessed to reflect current values.

Northampton County, which handles assessments for the Town of Cape Charles, had not done a reassessment for five years — before the real estate bubble burst.

According to Town Manager Heather Arcos, the reassessed values in the Town of Cape Charles are 35 percent lower than last year.

For Northampton County overall, values dropped 20 percent, according to County Administrator Katie Nunez.

During the real estate bubble, values swelled more in Cape Charles than elsewhere in the County, and now those Town values have dropped the most.

Rising property values tempt governing bodies to increase their budgets for “free” – that is, without increasing the general tax rate.

But when property values fall, counties and towns are faced with the necessity of increasing the tax rate just to obtain the same amount of money as before.

Northampton County Board of Supervisors would have to increase property taxes from 54 cents to 70 cents per hundred dollars of property value just to maintain the same income as last year.

But since budgets include cost of living increases and other inflationary items, the tax rate could be even higher. [Read more…]

There was a great turnout

for a very nice ceremony,

demonstrating that Cape Charles

is proud of its watermen.
