As the Community Events/Recreation Coordinator I would like to thank so many people who helped to make this year’s 4th of July Street Parade and Festival a fun day for all.
Trina Veber once again faced the hot temperatures to emcee the day’s events.
Paul Skolnick and Elsie Bowen judged the parade.
Matt Evans ran the tournaments.
Spencer Travis and friend as well as Sharon Silvey took on the very difficult task of judging the beautiful baby contest.
Thanks also to:
— Marie Brady and all the people she rounded up to make the parade happen;
— Pete Leontieff, Paul Yates and Mike Mullner for running the Golf Cart Obstacle Course;
— Malcolm Hayward for putting together another challenging scavenger hunt;
— Tom Bonadeo for putting up the PA system at the last minute;
— The Cape Charles Community Band;
— Danielle Campbell, who always decorates the beach gazebo;
— Dora Sullivan for taking care of Trash to Treasures;
— Claudette Twichell for putting together the Guppie Challenge;
— The Cape Charles Fire Company for manning the beer truck and leading the parade; and
— Spencer Parker for rounding up all the other fire companies for the parade.
If I have left anyone out, I am so sorry. It is hard to remember everyone when the Town comes together and pulls off the best 4th of July ever!

Poor choice of photos for this article. Controversy does not belong in an Independence Day Celebration.
The Eastern Shore News, the area’s largest newspaper, also included a very artistic photo by Jay Diem of children shooting hoops on the Old School Cape Charles parade truck. The photo is #14 in a gallery which may be viewed here.

Freedom of speech most certainly belongs in an Independence Day Celebration.
The parade was the neatest I have ever seen in Cape Charles. My grandkids talk about being in the parade all year long. It was a gentle reminder why I love living in this beautiful small town. It is such a shame any controversy has to be a part of the parade. There is a time and place but during the parade was inappropriate. Don’t tell me it is the perfect time we express our independence if that’s the case we should have a parade of nothing but controversial issues. We can make it a day of nothing but negativity!
