Bertie ‘Buck’ Abbott, 88, Retired Bridge Tunnel Policeman

Bertie “Buck” Abbott, Jr., 88, husband of Thelma Lewis Abbott and a resident of Cheriton, passed away Friday, August 16, at his residence.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 20, at Cheriton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Patricia Money officiating. Interment will follow in Cape Charles Cemetery with Masonic Rites. Family will join friends at Wilkins-Doughty Funeral Home 6-7:30 p.m. Monday.

Mr. Abbott was born March 16, 1925, in Townsend, the son of the late Bertie O. Abbott, Sr., and the late Manie Costin Abbott. He was a retired Sargent for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel Police, member of Cheriton United Methodist Church, Cheriton Volunteer Fire Company and Capeville Masonic Lodge #107 AF & AM.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Linda Linzey of Virginia Beach, Dan Phillips Abbott of Portsmouth; two sisters, Susie Kelley of Norfolk, Ella Edwards of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother, Gerald Abbott of Norfolk; two grandchildren, Jason Gordon and his wife, Kathryn, of Fredericksburg, Kathlin Gordon of Virginia Beach; three great grandchildren, Lily Gordon, William Gordon, and Emmalyne Furman. He was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.
