Virginia “Skip” Brady Parker, 84, wife of the late William “Digger” Parker and a resident of Cape Charles, passed away Thursday, January 3, at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, January 7, at Cape Charles Cemetery with the Rev. Joe Moore officiating.
Family will join friends at Wilkins-Doughty Funeral Home Sunday evening from 7-8:30 p.m..
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
A native of Oyster, Mrs. Parker was the daughter of the late Michael H. Brady and the late Catherine Moore Brady. [Read more…]
Elizabeth Bowden Ballard, 91, Cape Charles Native

Elizabeth Bowden Ballard, better known as Bess, 91, wife of the late Claude Elmore Ballard and a resident of Willis Wharf, passed away Wednesday, January 2, at her residence.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday, January 6, at Doughty Funeral Home with the Rev. L.Raymond McGarr officiating. Interment will be private. Memorials may be made to Epworth United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 488, Exmore, VA 23350 or to S.P.C.A. Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 164, Onley, VA 23418.
A native of Cape Charles, Mrs. Ballard was the daughter of the late James Edward Bowden and the late Lorena Dunton Bowden. She was an officer of Ballard Brothers Fish Company, manager of Cherrystone Campgrounds Store, the first President of Broadwater Parents Association, Past Worthy Matron and Member of Order of the Eastern Star Northampton Chapter #2, and a member of Epworth United Methodist Church. Betty Lou Parks, 92, wife of the late Walter James Parks and a resident of Cheriton, passed away Wednesday, January 2, at her residence.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, January 5, at Cheriton United Methodist Church with Reverends Patricia Money, Jeff Conrow, and Russell Goodrich officiating.

She was a retired teller for Bank of America in Cape Charles, VA, 50-year member of Trinity United Methodist Church, member of Cheriton United Methodist Church, longtime member of Young Woman’s Club of Cape Charles and member of Northampton Country Club. CORRECTION: Kiptopeke Inn Still for Sale

The Kiptopeke Inn is still for sale.
The Wave incorrectly reported December 29 that Robert Occhifinto, who on December 28 bought Bay Creek Marina, AQUA restaurant, and adjoining properties, earlier bought the Kiptopeke Inn. Although Occhifinto has bought other properties, including the Peacock Motel, and did make an offer on the Kiptopeke Inn, his offer on the Inn was not accepted. [Read more…]

LETTER: Why Was Gazette Mum about Closing the Basketball Court?

DEAR EDITOR:
The Gazette is the official Town newsletter. My question is, who is responsible for the Gazette, and who approves it?
Last Friday after discovering from local kids that our basketball backboards had been removed, I went to Mayor Dora Sullivan to report this. Her response was: “We don’t own them anymore.”
My reaction was — what? Why would the Town remove the backboards during the Christmas-New Year’s break?
She had no answer.
I asked the mayor if the closing of the basketball court had been posted on the Town website and Gazette. She said no, but that the Cape Charles Wave interviewed [Assistant Town Manager] Bob Panek about the backboards’ removal.
I am frustrated by the lack of knowledge available on the day-to-day business of Cape Charles. The Town felt it was important to post changes to the garbage pickup holiday schedule, but said nothing about removing the basketball goals.
What’s next? Pay raises for a job well done on giving away the school, basketball court, and playground parking lot for $10? [Read more…]
